Harold Dobernecker bolted to a strong start but darkness and a demanding PGA Tour course combined to muddy the opening-day results for the Central College men’s golf team at the Garn Championship Monday.

Teams were attempting to play 36 holes at the par-72 Champions Trace Golf Course, which is also the site of the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship, but darkness fell with the Dutch still needing to play two holes. Results were incomplete but Central was tied for 12th in a 23-team field, 24 shots back of early leader Cumberland (Ky.).

Dobernecker opened with a 74 and was just one shot out of the individual 18-hole lead. The rest of the squad had difficulty mastering the dry fairways and slick greens, finishing at 326 overall. John Oltman shot 81, Kayden Pendergrass had an 83, and Jacob Moffett and Cole McGriff each shot an 88. Blake Wynn, playing as an individual entrant, shot 76.

The conclusion of the second round and the final 18-hole round start Tuesday at 7 am.
