Both Pella’s boys and girls soccer teams braved what they hope is the coldest day of the new spring season, with the home team riding a four-goal performance from Abby Warner to defeat Winterset 5-0, and the boys dropping a close match with Ankeny 2-1 in a penalty kick showdown Tuesday evening.

At home, the Dutch looked sharp and found plenty of scoring opportunities for their multiple-time All-State selection, who scored the contest’s first four tallies, which included two assists from newcomer and Newton transfer Bri Shannon and one from junior Claire Smock, who also scored the final mark late in the second half. Pella had nine corner kick opportunities. The Dutch girls are 1-0 and off until they host Norwalk next Tuesday.

On the road, the 2nd half was when Pella struck first on the scoreboard with a 30 yard shot on a free kick by Teddy Apostolopoulos. Ankeny got a goal back with a one-touch shot of their own and tied it. With only minutes left, Pella had a goal overturned by the officials, and ended knotted up in regulation.

Pella was the team with more opportunities throughout the 20 minutes of extra time, but couldn’t find the back of the net. The game went through two rounds of penalty kicks, but Ankeny earned the win by making a keeper save late.

“It was a good start for the Dutch, facing a 4A school in their first match in very difficult conditions and playing well,” said Head Coach Mark Solomon.

Tristan Huckstep had eight saves in his debut Pella Goalkeeper. The Dutch boys return to the pitch Thursday at home against Winterset.
