The Knoxville girls soccer team handed Class 1A #15 ranked Pella Christian their first loss of the season Monday night, pulling out a 2-1 overtime victory.
Battling the misty and windy conditions on Eagle Lane, scoring was hard to come by throughout the night. The contest was scoreless through the first 20 minutes of action, before the Eagles finally found the net. In the 24th minute, Esther Ford’s corner kick found Tori Van Zee in the box, who headed in Pella Christian’s lone goal of the night. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Eagles into the early part of the second half, before the Panthers found the equalizer. In the 55th minute of the game, Knoxville’s Payton Horn found the back for the tying goal, and that 1-1 score held until the end of regulation. In the fifth minute of extra time, Charlye Willis connected with Janae Baker, who beat the goalkeeper to score the golden goal for the Panthers. On the night, Knoxville had six shots, five shots on goal, and one corner kick, while Pella Christian had 10 shots, eight shots on goal, and six corner kicks.
The Panthers improved to 1-2 overall on the season and they will be back in action at home this Friday against Ballard. The Eagles dropped to 2-1 overall on the spring, and they return to the pitch tonight for a 5:30 pm match at Newton.
