Pella Christian Boys Golf Finishes in Second Place at Dutch Invitational
The Pella Christian boys golf team finished one stroke back of a meet title for the second time this season on Thursday, this time finishing behind Pella at the Dutch Invitational.
The Eagles posted a team score of 320 on the afternoon, which gave them second place behind Pella’s 319. In their first meet of the season, Pella Christian finished in second place with a 301, with Gilbert winning that meet with a 300. Eliot Menninga led the way for the Eagles on the day, taking third place individually with a 74. Deacon Branderhorst tied for 7th place in the meet with a 78, Cooper Spronk took 12th place with an 83, and Isaiah Breems rounded out the official scoring with an 85 and a 16th place finish.
The Pella Christian boys golf squad returns to action on Tuesday, competing in the Little Hawkeye Conference meet at Edmundson Golf Course in Oskaloosa.
Eagles Tennis Teams Blank Oskaloosa in Season Openers
The Pella Christian tennis teams finally began their season Thursday, and did so by dominating Oskaloosa in a pair of sweeps. The Eagle boys swept the Indians 11-0 at home, while the girls were victorious 10-0 on the road.
The Pella Christian boys lost just one set throughout the night, with Shaun Bos leading the way with a 6-1, 6-2 win in his #1 singles match. Winning in the #2-#6 spots in the lineup were Aaron Meinders (6-1, 6-2), Rob Schreur (6-2, 6-2), Rhett Terpstra (6-4, 3-6, 1-0), Kirby Van Wyngarden (6-2, 6-2), and Evan Tschetter (6-2, 6-3). In doubles action, Bos and Meinders won 6-4, 6-3 at #1, Schreur and Terpstra won at #2 7-5, 6-0, Van Wyngarden and Zeb Kanis won 6-2, 6-2 at #3, Tschetter and Andrew De Vries won 6-4, 6-3 at #4, and Carson Tukker and Jonathan Van Gorp won 6-0, 6-1 at #5.
In singles play for the Eagle girls at Oskaloosa, Rachel Lanferman was victorious 6-1, 6-1 #1, Reagan De Vries won 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 at #2, and Leah Mulder won 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 at No.3. Rounding out singles action, Ava Breems won 6-3, 6-4 at #4, Lexi Branderhorst won 6-3, 7-6 at #5, and Addie Van Arendonk won 6-2, 6-3 at #6. In doubles, the Eagles #2 of Lanferman and Branderhorst won 7-5, 6-4, the #3 team of Mulder and Breems won, 6-3, 7-6, the #4 team of Renae Van Wyk and Breece Gibson won 6-1, 6-1, and the No.5 team of Kate Braafhart and Lauren Winn won 6-0, 6-1. The #1 doubles team of De Vries and Van Arendonk were unable to finish out their match due to darkness.
The Pella Christian tennis teams each open the season at 1-0, and both squads return to action today. The girls host crosstown-rival Pella at 3:30 pm this afternoon, while the boys are at Grinnell at 4:15 pm.
Pella Christian Soccer Teams Dominate Doubleheader on Eagle Lane
The Pella Christian girls soccer team dominated Centerville Thursday night in a 4-0 win and the boys soccer squad completed the doubleheader sweep on Eagle Lane with a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.
Tori Van Zee got the scoring started for the Eagles in the 34th minute of the girls games, finding the back of the net from 32 yards out on an assist from Chloe Snyder. Two minutes later, Maggie Vos gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead, using the wind to her advantage to bury an unassisted goal from 42 yards out. That score held into halftime, before Esther Ford put the game away late for PC. Ford beat the goalie off of an assist from Lexi Terpstra in the 66th minute to extend the lead to 3-0, before scoring an unassisted goal in the 68th minute to push the Eagles to 4-1 on the season.
The Pella Christian boys found the scoreboard early on in their match, as Nathan Brouwer converted on a penalty kick in the 5th minute to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage. That score held into halftime, before PC broke the game open early on in the second half. Ethan Van Arendonk and Theo Hugen each found the back of the net in the 43rd minute to push Pella Christian’s lead to 3-0, before Caue Bastos scored off a Camden Parker corner kick to wrap up the scoring in the 45th minute. The win improved the Eagle boys to 2-1 overall on the season.
The Pella Christian boys will make up Monday’s postponed match with Albia tonight at 7:15 pm, while the girls soccer team returns to the pitch on Tuesday at Norwalk.
Pella Christian Boys and Girls Track and Field Meet At North Mahaska Canceled
The Pella Christian track and field team had their third meet of the season canceled Thursday afternoon. The Eagles were slated to run in the 2024 Steve Ehret Relays at North Mahaska before the event was called off. Pella Christian had their meet Tuesday at Davis County postponed and also had their scheduled season opening meets on Tuesday, March 26th canceled as well. The Eagles track and field teams will now attempt to compete in just their second meets of the season on Tuesday, when they host the Pella Christian CoEd Meet.
