Dutch Outslugged by Beavers in Baseball Loss

Getting outhit 17-7, the Central College baseball team fell 11-4 against Buena Vista University Friday afternoon.

The Beavers had three players with three-hit games. Central’s offense had just seven total hits, led by two apiece from catcher Dom DeLaPaz and right fielder Colton DeRocher. DeRocher, Chance Dreyer, Declan O’Hare, and Garrett Guenther had one RBI apiece in the loss. O’Hare gave the Dutch 5.1 innings of work as the starting pitcher, yielding five earned runs with 11 hits and three walks while striking out four. Two freshmen pitchers made their debuts in relief of O’Hare. Xander Poock was first to appear, giving up three earned runs in 1.2 innings, with Bo Gerbracht following with two scoreless frames to close out the game.

Central and Buena Vista continue their series with a doubleheader today starting at 1 pm.

69 for Central’s Dobernecker Ties for Illinois Wesleyan Men’s Golf Lead

Posting another memorable round as part of a record-setting senior year, Central College’s Harold Dobernecker shot a 2-under-par 69 and is tied for the top spot in a power-packed 36-hole Illinois Wesleyan Invitational after Friday’s round.

Among the oversized 37-team field, Central shot 307 on the par-71 Weibring Golf Course Friday and is tied for 18th place. Dobernecker shares first with Quinn Clifford of Illinois Wesleyan, after he birdied three of the last six holes to post a 2-under-par 33 on the back nine following an even-par 36 on the front nine. He had five birdies on the day and finished one shot off his career best. Kayden Pendergrass carded a 78, while John Oltman and Jacob Moffett each shot 80, and Cole McGriff had 82. Playing as an at-large entrant, Blake Wynn shot 79.

The Dutch take on the par-72 Ironwood Golf Course to finish off the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday.

Central Women Shut Out St. Ambrose Tennis Team

A dominant effort up and down the lineup resulted in a 7-0 victory for the Central College women’s tennis team over St. Ambrose University on Friday.

Central (8-9) recorded their second team shutout of the season against the Bees. Playing under NAIA rules, the Dutch earned one point by winning all three doubles matches to start the contest. The No. 1 doubles team of Emma Murphy and Lauren Gano won 6-1. The No. 2 team of Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney and Becca Vala won 6-3. Jennifer Larson and Madi Whalen won 6-2 at No. 3. Jenna Hernandez was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at No. 1 singles, Whalen won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2, Mahoney won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3, Vala won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and Murphy won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5. Gano was the only singles player to not win in straight sets, battling for a 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 win at No. 6 singles.

Central travels to Indianola Sunday for an 11 a.m. match against Simpson College.
