Growing season can be defined multiple ways and through many means, according to State Climatologist Justin Glisan.

He says some of the biggest keys are when the ground is fully thawed from winter to when scenery starts to turn green, sprout, or blossom — and that ultimately, when planting is ready for various species of plants.

“The definition of the growing season is up to what you’re planting and what stakeholder you are,” he says.

For farmers, this typically means a stretch of weather where the air temperature remains near or above 50 degrees for multiple days and drier soils. He says in 2024, the state remains anywhere from two to three weeks ahead of schedule due to a warm winter and a prediction of generally above average temperatures through the end of this month.
