The Norwalk track and field teams and the girls tennis squad all competed at home on Monday night, highlighted by a meet title for the Warrior track boys.
Boys win Norwalk Coed Track Invitational; Girls place 3rd
The Norwalk boys won six events and placed in the top three a combined 20 times, scoring 192 points to win the meet title of the Norwalk Coed Track Invitational. Dallas Center-Grimes placed a distant second with 131. The Norwalk girls scored 100.5 points to place third behind Ames (146) and DC-G (131).
The Warrior boys’ six gold medals included a sweep of the 3200 and 800-meter run by Tony Anania. The Norwalk junior set his third outdoor school record of the spring in the 800, clocking a Drake Relays-qualifying Blue Standard time of 1:55.24. Freshman Logan Atherton cleared a personal-best six feet, three inches to win the high jump and Isaac Sutcliffe won the 110-meter hurdles.
Norwalk also won a pair of relays. Kadan Borcherding-Johnson, Nate Platner, Alex Ubben and Tillman Papcun placed first in the distance medley while Daniel Webster, Cameron Thomas, Daniel Roche and Sutcliffe teamed up in the shuttle hurdle relay for the first time and posted a winning time of 1:01.9 out of the slow heat.
The Warrior boys’ eight second-place efforts included Cameron Thomas in the 400 and high jump, Platner in the 100, Teegan Kralik in the 3,200 and Harrison Tripp in the discus.
The Norwalk girls earned a pair of gold medals late in the meet. Bailey Birmingham finished strong to win the 400 hurdles in 1:11.25 and the 4×100 relay quartet of Savannah Welch, Hailey Gear, Jaylynn Brandt and Nyah Hulbert tied for first place in 51.67.
The Warriors’ second-place finishers were Lauren Black in the discus, Hulbert in the 200 and Ashlyn Brown in the 400. Norwalk took third in both the 4×800 and 4×200 relays, breaking 1:50 in the 4×200.
The Norwalk track girls return to action Thursday at Waukee Northwest. The boys compete at North Polk on Friday.
Norwalk tennis girls fall 6-5
The Norwalk girls tennis team lost a narrow 6-5 decision against Ames on Monday, falling to 2-1 on the season. The dual featured five matches going to a third-set super tiebreaker, with Norwalk winning three of the five.
Katie Larson, Grace Dehmer and Julia Palen all earned singles wins for the Warriors. Doubles wins came from Anya Kallenbach and Larson, as well as Sutton McNelly and Palen. Norwalk will host Ballard on Thursday afternoon.
