Boys Track Wins Home Event, Girls 7th At Panther Relays
It was a windy evening at the 57th Edition of the Panther Relays at Randy Wilson Track on Thursday and the Knoxville boys and the Pella girls came out on top of their respective meets. For the boys, the Panthers did not have the entire team due to several dual sports athletes playing soccer. However Knoxville was able to score 131 total points, out-pacing Marshalltown by 13 points. Winning for the Panthers was Austin Washington in the 400 in a time of :54.55, Koby Higginbotham in the 400 hurdles in a time of :57.52. Higginbotham and Kaiden Smith went one/two with the high jump with Kaiden winning the event. The roles were reversed in the 110 hurdles with Koby taking top honors. Both tell KNIA/KRLS Sports they push each other to be their best.
Koby: We just picked up where we left off last year, and this year we’re at six foot or six/two and just trying to push each other at practice and at meets.”
Kaiden: “we just push ourselves at meets and at practice we sort of joke around with each other, and that helped a lot.”
For the girls, Ciara Heffron, already setting a Blue Standard earlier in the year in the discus, dominated that event throwing a toss of 133 feet virtually into the wind. She also was 2nd in the shot put.
Knoxville Tennis Squads Fall To Clarke
Both Knoxville Tennis Squads took losses to Clarke on Thursday as the boys fell to the Indians 7-2, and the girls lost 6-3. Boys winners were Henry Picard winning 8-5 at #1 singles and Eli Bumgardner winning at #4 singles. For the girls it was Janie Maasdam at #1 singles and Bridgette Liston winning at #6 singles. The #3 doubles team of Kate Schneider and Mackenzie Karr was the only Panthers win at doubles. The boys will host their own invitational on Saturday.
