The Knoxville City Council approved a revised Veterans District concept plan at their meeting Monday night.

In 2020, after Marion County officially acquired the VA campus land from the US Government, there was a concept plan designed by Confluence Inc. and has been used in practice to guide development in the VA District. Some changes to the new plan include the name from master plan to concept plan, flexible land use policies, chronology, and organizing principles. Knoxville City Manager Heather Ussery says this new plan gives more flexibility for the Veterans District.

“There are no significant changes overall from the initial concept. It’s basically taking a step back from the initial concept, and developing a framework for moving forward that gives us more flexibility. A lot of the conversations we’ve had, they evaluate the concept plan and say well that shows townhomes there, but it doesn’t have to be townhomes. It can be any type of residential space. With the new concept it gives us the freedom and flexibility to be able to do that. We think overall it will help with those conversations and development moving forward.”
