A trio of Simpson Storm athletes earned recognition from the American Rivers Conference after their performances over the weekend.
Simpson baseball senior Trey Castile has been named the American Rivers Conference Pitcher of the Week. Castile recorded a career-high 15 strikeouts in a 7-0 victory over the Dutch in the series opener last Friday. He came within one out of a complete game and carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning, eventually giving up Central’s only hit of the day, a pinch-hit single with two outs. He retired the first 11 batters he faced and scattered just three walks the rest of the way to earn his sixth win of the year.
Lara Kallem of the Simpson College women’s track and field team was named the women’s track athlete of the week after breaking the school record in the 10,000 meters at the Phil Esten Challenge in La Crosse, Wis. She was the top collegiate finisher in the race, placing second overall in a time of 35:10.24, breaking Jen Wendt’s previous record by over two minutes.
Ulysses Patterson of the Simpson College men’s track and field team was named the American Rivers Conference Men’s Field Performer of the Week.
Patterson’s honor means the Storm have now taken home at least one weekly conference honor since the start of the outdoor season at the beginning of the month. The Clinton, Iowa native is earning his second career weekly honor, with his previous honor coming during indoor season earlier this year.
Patterson won the decathlon at the Augustana Meet of Champions this past weekend, scoring 6,513 points to set a new personal best. The mark moved him up to fifth all-time in school history and also placed him fifth in Division III this season.
