The demolition of the former Knoxville Middle School building is complete, and clean-up work is now in progress.
The project, which was done by Midwest Demolition Contractors, originally started in early January. Also included in the project was the removal of contaminated soil from a fuel tank that leaked onto the property years ago. Now that the building is completely torn down, Knoxville Community School District Business Manager Craig Mobley said it’s just a matter of filling holes in and planting grass.
“If you drive by there you will see that the big dirt pile that has been sitting there for a while, that is now getting taken down and spread out over the site. They are going to be compacting the soil, getting everything filled in, getting all of the holes filled in, and then they will start seeding. The fences will come down, and it will really be some big open flat ground, with some grass hopefully starting to grow in the near future.”
The City of Knoxville will take ownership of this land in June, and they plan to utilize it as the future home of a new public safety/city hall facility.
