Dutch Offense Stalls in Baseball Loss to Wartburg
The Central College baseball team notched seven hits but was undone by eight runners left on base in 7-1 loss to Wartburg College Saturday afternoon.
The Knights are leading the Dutch (13-21, 7-12 conference) in the seventh inning of the second game that was suspended due to weather. The game will be completed on Monday at 2 pm, with the final game of the three-game series to follow.
Wartburg only outhit Central by a slim 8-7 in the opener but were able to convert those base runners into runs. Colton DeRocher and catcher Caleb Douglass both had two hits, including an RBI single by DeRocher in the third inning. Mark Kenney took the loss on the mound in game one, striking out five in 5.0 innings but allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks. Central has two hits thus far in the second game, including another single from DeRocher and Brayden Sawyer. Max Steinlage was the starting pitcher, giving up two earned runs while striking out 11 in 6.0 innings.
Central has a chance to pick up two wins Monday and stay alive in the chase for a spot in the American Rivers Conference postseason tournament.
Coe Gives Central Men’s Tennis Loss in Regular Season Finale
Suffering a 9-0 loss at Coe College, the Central College men’s tennis team wrapped up the regular season Saturday morning.
The Dutch (8-13, 5-3 American Rivers Conference) finished in fourth place in the league standings. Two Central players were able to split sets in their singles matches. Alex Slaymaker won the first set at No. 6 by a 6-3 margin but would finish with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) loss. Alejo Marcon also won the second set in a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) loss in the No. 3 slot.
Central will host Nebraska Wesleyan University Tuesday at 4 pm in the American Rivers Conference tournament quarterfinals.
Dutch Women’s Distance Medley Relay Team Wins at Drake Relays
Running the third-fastest mark in program history, the Central College women’s track and field team’s distance medley relay team won the Iowa College division Saturday morning at the Drake Relays.
Leah Bontrager, Alivia Roerdink, Sara Goodenbour and Addison Parrott combined for the distance medley relay victory in a time of 12 minutes, 23.83 seconds. Central also sent a men’s team into the Iowa College division and it finished second in 10:16.59. An all-freshman contingent of William Wadsley, Blake Creed, Mason Back and Jack Brown represented the Dutch. In the University/College Division, Central’s men’s shuttle hurdle relay team of Grant Miller, Gage Huyser, Connor Miklos and Reid Pakkebier was seventh in 1:00.56.
Central has its final meet of the regular season next Friday in a triangular Wartburg College.
