Pella Christian Boys Golf Takes 2nd At Knoxville Invite
The Pella Christian Golf team secured a 2nd place finish at the Knoxville Invite at Pine Knolls Country Club in Knoxville on Saturday.
The Eagles shot a team score of 306 on the day, finishing behind the host Panthers, who shot a 284 on their home course. The Eagles were led by senior Isaiah Breems with a +3 over par 73, good for 4th place overall. Eliot Menninga came in tied for 5th place with a +5 over par score of 75. Junior Cooper Spronk was tied for 10th with a 78 on the day, while juniors Landon Fransman and Deacon Branderhorst tied each other with a +10 over par 80. Carter Brand rounded out the varsity team by shooting an 87.
The Eagles next compete in the third and final regular season Little Hawkeye Conference meet at Blue Top Ridge on Monday. The meet will be hosted by Washington and will consist of the 4 conference teams along with other schools from outside of the conference.
Pella Christian Girls Tennis 6th at Pella Invitational
The Pella Christian girls tennis team competed at the Pella Invitational Saturday morning and took sixth place as a team with 35 points.
Rachel Lanferman notched a pair of wins for the Eagles in singles play, winning a match in each the championship and consolation brackets. Lanferman opened with a 4-0, 4-0 victory over Emerson Keith of Ottumwa, before falling 4-0, 4-1 to Kate Holton of Columbus. In the consolation bracket, Lanferman defeated Quinn Kinzenbaw of Marion 4-0, 4-0, but fell to Pella’s Mallory Westerkamp in the consolation semifinals to finish in a tie for seventh place.
Both of Pella Christian’s doubles teams fell in their championship bracket matches, but recovered to grab victories in the consolation bracket. Reagan De Vries and Addie Van Arendonk won both their first match (2-4, 4-3, 1-0) and their quarterfinal match (4-2, 3-4, 1-0) of the consolation bracket against both of Columbus’ doubles teams, but fell to Pella’s Bryn Higginbotham and Claire Smock (4-0, 4-1) to finish tied for seventh. Ava Breems and Leah Mulder also won their first consolation match against J. DeBoef/A. Morrow of Oskaloosa (3-4, 4-3, 1-0), but had their day end with a loss to Ottumwa’s N. Morgan and J Lee (4-0, 4-2) in the quarterfinals.
The Eagles girls tennis team is back in action Monday, hosting Centerville for a 4:15 pm match.
Pella Christian Girls Soccer Splits Games at Home Triangular
Hosting a triangular on Eagle Lane, the Pella Christian girls soccer team split their contests against Columbus and Burlington Notre Dame Saturday morning and afternoon.
The Eagles opened the triangular with a 2-0 win over Columbus, but fell on penalty kicks to Burlington Notre Dame 2-1. In the opener, Pella Christian recorded 22 shots, 12 shots on goal, and four corner kicks en route to the victory. Esther Ford netted both goals for the Eagles in the win, scoring one in each half. In their second game, Pella Christian fell behind 1-0 in the first half, but Esther Ford’s third goal of the day and team-high ninth of the season re-tied the game in the second half. The 1-1 tie held until the end of regulation and through both overtime periods, sending the game to penalty kicks. Lexi Terpstra connected on her first penalty kick, but that was the only goal the Eagles got in the shootout, while the Nikes converted all three of their attempts to seal the win.
With Saturday’s results, Pella Christian now holds a 6-5 overall record. The Eagles are set to return to the pitch on Tuesday, opening a girls-boys soccer doubleheader at Pella at 5:30 pm.
