Boys Soccer Splits Home Tournament
Pella hosted its annual varsity boys soccer tournament on Saturday, splitting their two matches. The Dutch defeated Fort Madison 2-0 and fell to #4 in 3A ADM 1-0. In the opener, Pella was able to open up the scoring in the 2nd half thanks to goals by Austin Bone and Carson Leathers. Head Coach Mark Solomon says the afternoon game with the Tigers was very well matched, but with less than a minute left in the first half, ADM placed an excellent shot over the Dutch goalkeeper and went up 1-0. Despite creating several chances throughout the second half, Pella could not find an answer. The Tulip City soccer showdown awaits the boys next in doubleheader format on Tuesday.
Pella Girls Tennis 2nd at Home Invitational
Adopting a format they found success with at the recent Knoxville tournament, Pella tried to speed things up to beat the weather at their home girls tennis invitational. Class 2A’s #1 team in Iowa Dowling placed 1st with 170 points, with #1 in 1A Pella behind at 140, followed by Marion in 3rd at 52.5. Emily Blom, ranked as the No. 3 individual in 1A, fell to #2 Kate Holton of Columbus in the finals of the individual bracket. Alloree Else and Lily Van Dusseldorp placed 3rd in the doubles bracket, and singles player Mallory Westerkamp and the pair of Claire Smock and Bryn Higginbotham were unable to finish their consolation matches in the fifth place round due to lightning.
