The Norwalk girls soccer team knocked off top-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes on the road Monday night, prevailing 1-0 in a PK shootout that came down to sudden death. The Warrior boys soccer team, meanwhile, lost to DC-G 1-0 in overtime and the girls golf team placed eighth at the Johnston Dragon Invitational.

Girls Soccer wins in PK shootout

Ranked fifth in Class 2A, the Norwalk soccer girls notched their third straight win over a top 10 opponent by taking down the No. 1 Mustangs in dramatic fashion. Following 100 scoreless minutes of soccer, the match went to a penalty kick shootout and DC-G led 3-2 after three attempts. The Warriors rallied to force a 4-4 tie after five, forcing sudden death. Moments later, Norwalk goalie Katie Liedtke made her second crucial save of the shootout and Addy Wood followed with the game-winner. Also converting PKs for Norwalk were Anna Larson, Tatum Miller, Braelyn Clark and Reese Trebilcock.

The Warriors improved to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference, forcing a four-way tie for first in the loss column with DC-G, Pella and Indianola. Norwalk coach Andrew Messer says that the team has really come together during the last few days, allowing zero goals in wins over sixth-ranked Independence, ninth-ranked Spencer and now the top-ranked Mustangs.

“We are excited,” he said. “We have been talking about how our individual success can lead to our teammate’s success, which in turn can lead to the team’s success. Everything has been a process and we have gone through some struggles this season. Getting these last three wins, and doing it as a team, just shows what we are working towards.”

The Warriors return to action on Friday night, hosting Urbandale.

Boys Soccer falls in OT

Jace Davis and Keilor Rodman attempted the only shots on goal for the Warriors, who will play at Urbandale on Friday night.
