A rainy start to Pella’s signature festival could give way to a fantastic weather weekend. Meteorologist Brad Small with the National Weather Service says precipitation expected to begin late tonight is expected to continue through much of Thursday, with heavy rain possible in some locations in central Iowa. Widespread totals between one-to-two inches are expected. While the rainfall is likely, he says to stay up-to-date with forecasts to seek changes, and that they are in contact with Marion County Emergency Management and the Pella Police Department for weather-related updates. Small says a washout is unlikely after Thursday, and while a passing rain shower can’t be ruled out, overall much better conditions are expected Friday and Saturday with highs in the upper 60s and sunny skies Friday before clouds return Saturday. No severe weather is expected during this time.

The Pella Police Department encourages everyone planning to attend Tulip Time festivities this week to be prepared in case of inclement weather or other emergencies. Captain Paul Haase says they worked with Marion County Emergency Management to develop a temporary, week-long alert service available to anyone with a cell phone. Those who text “Pellatulip” to 67283 will receive updates about severe weather, missing persons, and other potential public safety emergencies through Sunday, May 5th. From there, Haase encourages the public to tune in to 92.1 KRLS if a tornado or severe thunderstorm warning is issued. Haase says their communications call center at the corner of Main and Liberty Street remains a resource to any individuals needing assistance during the 89th Tulip Time.
