The South Central Conference Track and Field meet will now be on Monday as rain has chased away any chase to pull the meet off in Centerville tonight. The Knoxville girls have a chance to steal some points and potentially challenge for a top two or three finish if things go their way tonight. Coach Michael Splavec tells KNIA/KRLS Sports they have been working and making changes to the line up to find the right combinations.
Splavec: “This whole season we’ve had some tight groups and are well knit and we’re just waiting to see who’ll take the next step and how they’ll step into those events.”
As far as Panthers who could challenge for a top finish, Ciara Heffron is the heavy favorite in the discus as her early season throw of 141-3 inches which broke the school record is nearly 31 feet farther than any other thrower. She is also the #1 seed in the shot put with a best distance of 36 feet 11.5 inches. Along with Heffron, Avery Pelong is the #3 seed with a best throw of 33 feet 4.5 inches. For the boys, the Panthers are looking for a three-peat, but they know that Davis County will be looking to end that streak. Coach Eric Kellar expects the Mustangs to be good at several events, but hopes to double up in points with one/two finishes from high jumpers and hurdlers Koby Higginbotham and Kaiden Smith.
Kellar: “Davis County has a few things that they’ll kill us in and we have events we’ll beat them for sure. They really work hard and they’re hard on each other, they’re cousins so they are talking to each other.”
Both Davis County and Knoxville have several open events that are seeded either one/two or very high. Higginbotham has been outstanding in hurdles, qualifying for the Drake Relays in the 110 high, where is the top seed in the conference and is also the one seed in the 400 hurdles. He and Smith are the two and three seed in the high jump. Other top contenders for Knoxville are Isaac Rankin in the 1600 while the Panthers’ 4×100 meter relay team is a second seed.
