The Marion County Conservation Department released their May Nature Notes earlier this week. According to Marion County Naturalist Marla Mertz, migrant monarch butterflies are expected to be making their way through Iowa this month and laying eggs along their journey. Other butterflies to watch for are the meadow fritillary, the cabbage white, the question mark, the swallowtail, and more. Mertz also noted that painted and snapping turtle eggs will continue to hatch, and adult turtles will be migrating from bodies of water to land areas to lay eggs into the first part of June.
