Norwalk's All-Conference girls golfers

The Norwalk girls tennis team hosted a regional meet on Monday, the girls golfers placed second in the Little Hawkeye Conference and the boys track team was third at the Pella Dutch Invitational.

Kallenbach/Larson team places 3rd

The Norwalk tennis girls have a state alternate in the doubles team of seniors Anya Kallenbach and Katie Larson. Kallenbach and Larson defeated senior teammates Grace Dehmer and Tessa Livingston in Monday’s third-place match at the Class 2A Regional Singles and Doubles Tournament held in Norwalk. 

Both Warrior doubles teams defeated Des Moines Roosevelt opponents in the first round, then knocked off the third and fourth seeds from Urbandale and Waukee, respectively, in straight sets to advance to the semifinals. They were both defeated by Dowling Catholic teams in the semis, setting up their intrasquad battle for third place. Only the champion and runner-up qualify for the state meet.

In singles play, Norwalk senior Sutton McNelly and junior Julia Palen both lost in the first round. McNelly’s match was decided in a third-set tiebreaker. The Warriors now turn their attention to Class 2A Regional Team Duals. They will host Southeast Polk on Friday at 9:00 a.m.

Girls Golf 2nd in LHC

The Norwalk girls golf team placed second to Indianola in the third and final Little Hawkeye Conference Meet of the season. The Warriors shot a 356, led by Ava Garvey’s second-place round of 83 at the Indianola Country Club. Evelyn Kinney placed fourth with an 87, Addie Smith was seventh with a 92 and Lydia Krueger and Allison Soukup both carded a 94. Playing for the JV squad, Lillian Garvey and Calissa O’Connor posted scores of 83 and 84, respectively.

The Norwalk girls placed second in all three conference meets and had five players named All-Conference based on their cumulative placings. All-Conference honors went to Kinney, who was third overall, Ava Garvey (fifth), Smith (ninth), Soukup and Krueger. The Warriors’ next meet is Thursday’s Cedar Rapids Prairie Invite at Airport National Golf Course.

Boys Track 3rd at Pella meet

The Norwalk boys track team placed third with 107.5 points at the Pella Dutch Invitational held in Oskaloosa. Isaac Sutcliffe placed first in the 100-meter dash for the Warriors and also teamed with Nate Platner, Alex Ubben and Kadan Borcherding-Johnson to win the 4×100 relay. Sam Parker took second place in the mile. The Norwalk girls and boys track squads will host a Class 4A State Qualifying Meet on Thursday starting at 4:00 p.m.
