The Norwalk track and field teams earned a combined five automatic state bids on Thursday night while hosting a Class 4A Coed State Qualifying Meet. The Norwalk girls golfers also competed, placing fourth in the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invite with a school-record score.

Track Meet Highlights

Warrior junior Tony Anania was a three-event district champion on the night, sweeping the 3,200, 1,600 and 800-meter runs. His winning times were 9:28.42, 4:18.55 and 1:56.2. Also qualifying for next week’s state meet was the shuttle hurdle relay quartet of Daniel Webster, Cameron Thomas, Daniel Roche’ and Isaac Sutcliffe, who ran a school-record time of 59.79 seconds to place first.

The Norwalk boys also broke a school record in the 4×100 relay, placing third in 43.23 with the team of Nate Platner, Kadan Borcherding-Johnson, Logan Atherton and Sutcliffe. The Warriors expect the 4×100 and several other events to qualify at-large when the complete list of state meet qualifiers is announced today.

The Norwalk girls finished the night with one automatic state qualifier as junior sprinter Nyah Hulbert placed second in the 100-meter dash in 12.86. The Warriors placed third in the distance medley and 4×100 relays and hope to qualify those events, and possibly others, based on time.

Dowling Catholic won both team titles over second-place Waukee. The Norwalk boys placed third with 129 points and the girls placed fifth with 66.

Girls Golf

The Norwalk girls golfers placed fourth out of 12 teams in Thursday’s Cedar Rapids Prairie Invite. The Warriors’ team score of 330 at Airport National Golf Course broke the 18-hole school record for the second time this month. Individually, junior Mariola Torro Abad paced Norwalk with a seventh-place round of 77.
