The Pella Christian boys tennis team opened the Class 1A Team Substate Tournament by cruising to a 5-0 sweep over Clarke, but their season came to an end later in the day Saturday with a 5-0 loss to Pella.
The first team to five match victories advanced in the team tournament, but the Eagles needed just three victories to move on against Clarke, due to the Indians only having five players and automatically forfeiting at #6 singles and at #3 doubles. In the singles matches, Rob Schreur won 6-4, 6-0 at #3, while Kirby Van Wyngarden and Rhett Terpstra won 6-0, 6-1 at #4 and #5 to move the Eagles into the semifinals. Aaron Meinders was leading 6-4 after his first set at #1 singles and Shaun Bos was up 6-2 after the opening set at #2, and both were leading in the second set before their matches went unfinished with Pella Christian already winning the other three matches. The Eagles season concluded in the semifinals, as the cross-town rival Dutch picked up the 5-0 sweep to advance to the Substate Finals.
Pella Christian ends the season with a 5-6 overall record and graduates five seniors in Bos, Clayton Huyser, Zeb Kanis, Carson Tukker, and Josiah Vos.
