Second Half Comeback Propels Eagles Boys Soccer to Substate Semifinals

After falling behind in the first half, the Eagles boys soccer team scored twice late in the second half to down Albia 2-1 in the first round of Class 1A Substate 7 action.

The Blue Demons maneuvered through the Pella Christian defense in the early seconds of the 18th minute to grab the early advantage. Albia’s 1-0 lead held into the halftime break and through the opening 20 minutes of the second half before the Eagles got their break. In the 61st minute, Ben Wyngarden got the ball in front of the net from Theo Hugen and was fouled by an Albia defender setting up a penalty kick. On the one-on-one opportunity, Nathan Brouwer beat the goalie to knot the game up at 1-1. Utilizing the momentum gained from tying the game, Pella Christian continued to keep the pressure on. The ball found the foot of Caue Bastos in the 73rd minute, who pushed it up the field to Theo Hugen, and Hugen weaved his way through the Blue Demon defense to give the Eagles their first lead. Despite Albia applying the pressure late, the PC defense prevailed to advance in the Substate Tournament.

The Eagles will get a week to rest up, before traveling to Iowa City Regina for the Substate Semifinals on Monday.
