The Pella Boys Golf team found its way back to the state golf tournament after a year away. The Dutch placed 2nd to Washington Tuesday in Williamsburg with a score 314 to earn two available bids to next week’s two-day tournament in Ames. Pella’s top four scores were Cade McGinley (76), Kyler Besick (78), AJ Hoekstra (79), and Cole Floden (83). The Dutch have won four state boys golf championships in school history (1969, 1973, 2001, 2003) and four other runner-ups, last appearing at state in 2022 when they placed 4th. The 2024 tournament will be held at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames on Monday and Tuesday.
Both Dutch boys and girls soccer teams lost on the road in their final regular season matches. Pella’s boys fell 2-0 to the #8 in 3A Marion Wolves, while the #5 Pella girls dropped a match 3-1 with #2-ranked North Polk Tuesday. The Dutch boys gave up one goal in each half in their contest with a state tournament contender. Pella finishes the regular season at 6-9 and opens the substate bracket following a bye at Newton on Monday, May 20th. The girls fell behind 2-0 by halftime and never quite found their footing. Abby Warner added a goal on a free kick late. Pella’s girls finish the regular campaign at 11-4 and also have a first round bye, awaiting the winner of Hoover or Newton in the 2A regional semifinals on Tuesday, May 21st at home.
