After getting its season opener rained out, the Twin Cedars Baseball Squad hopes to get the season underway tonight at Albia. The Sabers went 9-13 last season and 8-4 in the Bluegrass Conference to finish in 3rd place. Coach Mateo Varese tells KNIA/KRLS Sports his pitching staff got older over the offseason and with the experience they got in varsity action last season and knowing they can go longer this season Varese hopes to win more of the closer games that last season.

Varese: “We got a lot of good guys and arms back this season. We’re looking forward to getting Blake and Chase back on the mound. We don’t have to worry about keeping freshmen at 90 pitches, their sophomores now can go 110 in a game and 180 in a week and look forward to winning some of those games that may have snowballed out of control for last season.”

Blake Miectich was the leading returning arm as he went 2-4 last year with a 4.24 ERA and 28 strikeouts. Among some of the younger arms that will be called on this season will be Gavin Clark, Dallas Smith and Kaden Kloster. Tonight’s action is set to begin at 7:30. The Sabers opener which was supposed to have been Tuesday against North Mahaska was rained out and that game will be made up on June 6th.
