Traveling to Carlisle Friday night, the Pella Christian baseball team sustained an early lead to pick up a 3-1 win for their first victory of the young season.

Fresh off of a second place finish in the discus at the State Track and Field meet, Trevor Veenstra got the scoring started for the Eagles with a second inning solo home run to center field. Pella Christian extended their lead in the top of the fourth inning, when Luke Fynaardt doubled, and Caleb Van Arendonk drove him in a batter later with a double of his own. Veenstra further extended the lead, scoring Van Arendonk on a sacrifice fly to center field to push the Eagles advantage to 3-0. Carlisle notched a run in the sixth inning to cut Pella Christian’s lead to 3-1, but the Eagles shut the Wildcats down the rest of the way to improve to 1-1 overall on the season. Starting pitcher Connor Van Zee threw six innings in recording the win, striking out four while allowing one unearned run on seven hits and four walks. Veenstra recorded the save after entering in relief in the bottom of the seventh, striking out two and allowing no hits.

Pella Christian returns home for their next game on Monday, squaring off with Martensdale St. Mary’s at 7:30 pm.
