It was unfortunately a weather system that delivered as advertised for many, as an outbreak spawned multiple tornadoes and warnings across the state Tuesday.

Locally, many residents were spared from the worst, but three different rounds prompted nearly a dozen warnings in Marion and Warren Counties. The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team had live coverage first from 8:45 to 10 a.m., again from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m., and then from 4 to 6 p.m. as a major system brought different threats throughout the day. Nearly the entire KNIA/KRLS on-air and news staff contributed to coverage, as did several Weatherology meteorologists.

The worst damage locally was recorded during the second event, as tennis ball sized hail was recorded near Harvey, and many in both Knoxville and Pella received nickel-to-golf ball sized hail. Multiple vehicles on the south side of Pella received damage, including at Pella Christian High School. Brief downpours were also recorded, which has prompted localized flooding and some road closures. Indianola received heavy rainfall during the late afternoon storms, and had many tree branches down during a severe thunderstorm warning that was issued at that time.

Lake Red Rock is anticipated to rise significantly over the next several days as many locations along Interstate 80 received four-to-six inches of rain from Sunday afternoon through Tuesday evening. Many local road closures are expected to add up as well, especially in low-lying areas and near the lake as water levels begin to rise.

Several communities from southwest Iowa through central and northern portions of the state received significant damage from multiple tornadoes. The National Weather Service will be conducting extensive surveys in the next several days and partner with Emergency Management Organizations. Those with significant storm damage should report it to local emergency management agencies.

A calmer weather pattern is in place through Thursday, before more rain chances return on Friday and periodically throughout portions of the Memorial Day weekend.

The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team is on the air for any severe thunderstorm or tornado warning for Marion and Warren Counties.
