The Pella Christian boys golf team claimed runner-up honors at the 2024 Class 2A State Golf Tournament after several rounds of rain that fell over the Coldwater Golf Links in Ames canceled the second and final day of the tournament Tuesday morning.
The Eagles posted a team scoring of 307, finishing one stroke back of Beckman Catholic at 306. The Eagles, whose second place finish was the program’s best in school history, narrowly edged Grundy Center and Columbus Catholic at 308 and 309 respectively.
Junior Deacon Branderhorst claimed an individual medal for his efforts Monday, shooting a 2 over par 73 and taking 5th place after breaking a three-way tie for fifth. Junior Eliot Menninga followed close behind Deacon with a 3 over par 74 and tied for 8th place individually. Landon Fransman and Isaiah Breems rounded out the team scoring for the Eagles, each shooting a 9 over par 80 for the tournament. Cooper Spronk and Carter Brand finished out the Eagles varsity squad with an 82 and a 97.
Pella Christian will look to contend for the State Championship next spring, as recent graduate Isaiah Breems will be the only player from the six state golfers to compete that will depart the program.
