Storm damage in Pershing from storms on 5/24/2024 by Chelsie Jane

Twelve different severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings impacted Marion and Warren Counties this morning. The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team was on the air from 3:50 to 6:15 this morning as a mix of 70 MPH wind gusts, large hail, and radar indicated tornadoes impacted nearly every community in the region. Five staff members contributed to coverage and Weatherology provided meteorologist-based reports multiple times.

At one point there were at least 2,000 customers in the region without power. Multiple damage reports of downed trees and power lines have come in from in and around Pella, Indianola, Pleasantville, Sandyville, Milo and Pershing. Heavy rain also impacted much of the region, causing more localized flooding, especially in Mahaska County. School was cancelled at PCM due to damage in Prairie City.

The KNIA/KRLS Severe Weather Action Team is on the air for any severe thunderstorm or tornado warning in Marion and Warren Counties.
