With the heat of summer soon approaching, area residents are reminded to stay as safe as possible when faced with temperatures in the 90s and above. Fire Captain Thad White says three heat related issues are heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Treating cramps and exhaustion involves getting a person into a cool, indoor area and providing fluids to cool them down as fast as possible and stop dehydration. Heat stroke is a life-threatening situation that may require hospitalization, with symptoms including nausea and confusion, and requires a call to paramedics. Emergency departments recommend that if there are any questions if someone is dealing with a heat-related illness, do not hesitate to call 911.
