The Indianola boys soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to Des Moines Hoover in the quarterfinal round of the class 3A state tournament Wednesday 2-1 as heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The Indians defense shut down the high-flying Huskies throughout the first half, with goalkeeper Noah Kjellberg having multiple saves to keep a 0-0 scoreline going into the break. Hoover scored first after a great goal to go ahead 1-0 in the 23rd minute, then disaster struck for the Indians as a free kick deflected off of Indianola and found the back of the net for Hoover to lead 2-0 with just minutes remaining. The Indianola offensive press eventually pushed through for an Allan Martinez free kick goal with just :19 seconds remaining, but it was too late to complete the comeback.
Head coach Heath Weeks said after the game he was so proud of the fight the Indians showed throughout the entire contest, and this was a big step forward that the young team can build off of.
The Indians graduate a senior class of three.
