While there were two distinct ways they got there, the Pella softball and baseball teams both swept Newton on the road to open Little Hawkeye Conference competition Wednesday.
Pella’s softball girls won 13-3 and 13-9, while the Dutch baseball boys held Newton scoreless in 14 innings in win 6-0 and 3-0.
The bats were full of power on the softball diamond for the Dutch, as they racked up four home runs — including three from Katie Scheckel over the two games and one from Ava Curry.
Pella’s baseball twin bill was filled by a pair of gems thrown by a pair of Nathans — Carey gave up just seven baserunners in seven innings, striking out ten, and Vande Lune gave up just five baserunners and also struck out ten Cardinals.
The softball team’s record improves to 3-1 and the boys are up to 6-2, and both are now 2-0 in conference competition. Next up is a single game for each at Indianola Friday — both will be broadcast at approximately 7 p.m. on KNIA/KRLS.
