The Pella Christian baseball team managed to split a road Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader at Oskaloosa Monday night, while the softball team was swept in their twinbill.
The Eagles opened the baseball doubleheader by dropping a nail-biting 4-3 contest in 11 innings, before rebounding for an 8-1 victory in the second game. On the softball diamond, Pella Christian fell 10-5 in the opener and 14-2 in four innings in the nightcap.
After opening the baseball doubleheader with four and a half scoreless innings, Oskaloosa struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. The Eagles answered with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3, and that score held deep into extra innings. In the bottom of the 11th, the Indians walked off the game on an error with the bases loaded to secure the win. Looking to salvage the split, Pella Christian jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first four innings of the second game and never looked back. Holding the Indians scoreless after the third inning, the Eagles plated four more runs in the sixth inning to pull away for the win. Caleb Van Arendonk led Pella Christian’s offense in the opener with a three-run homer, before adding three RBIs in the nightcap. Luke Fynaardt was the only Eagle with multiple hits in the second game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The Eagles softball team dug themselves into an early hole in the opener and weren’t able to climb back out of it. Oskaloosa struck for a run in the bottom of the first, before erupting for eight runs in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead. Pella Christian plated five runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but it wasn’t enough to make up the deficit. Carrying the momentum from the game one win, the Indians struck for eight runs in the first three innings of the second game. The Eagles scored twice in the top of the fourth, but Oskaloosa scored six runs in the bottom of the frame to end the game via the run-rule. Faith Kacmarynski and Brynn Roozeboom combined for six of Pella Christian’s 13 hits in the opener, while Claire Braafhart had two of the team’s four hits in the nightcap.
The Eagles baseball team improved to 8-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference, while the softball team dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in league play. The Pella Christian summer sports teams are off tonight, before returning to Eagle Lane for single games against Newton on Wednesday.
