The Pella baseball and softball teams combined to finish season sweeps over Newton at home on Friday, as the girls rallied late to walk-off winners 5-4, while the baseball team largely dominated with their bats in a 10-2 victory heard live on KRLS3.
The Dutch baseball bats found their mark after struggling against the elite pitching of West Marshall on Thursday and for the vast majority of the doubleheader against Norwalk. Pella tallied 10 hits and four-run innings to start and end their trips to the plate in the 1st and 6th innings respectively. Nathan Vande Lune went 3-for-4 with a double, Nathan Carey was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, Teagan Hoekstra was 2-for-3 with a double, and Samuel Carlson was 2-for-3 at the plate. The Dutch move to 13-6 overall and have an 8-3 conference record.
Pella’s softball girls had to overcome a quiet week with their normally loud bats, and did so in the last minute to come from behind. The Dutch were down 4-0 after the top of the sixth, and were able to nab a run in the bottom of the frame before mounting a two-out rally in the 7th. Ava Curry tied the game with a two run double before Elah Heimstra sent her home with a single. Pella improves to 12-7 overall and 7-4 against conference foes. Both summer teams return at home Monday for a doubleheader with Indianola. Game two of both can be heard on KNIA/KRLS; the girls on 94.3 KNIA, and the boys on 92.1 KRLS.
