The Norwalk softball team plated nine first-inning runs on Wednesday night and needed just three innings to defeat Indianola, 13-0, in a game heard live on 94.3 KNIA and KNIA3. The Warriors walked off via the run rule on Grace Dehmer’s towering three-run homer to center field with two out in the bottom of the third.

The Class 4A 2nd-ranked Warriors improved to 21-2 overall and 12-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference, completing a season sweep of the Indians and extending their winning streak to nine games. Norwalk’s first eight batters reached safely in the first inning against two Indianola pitchers. Lauren Black blasted an RBI single off the fence, Addi Downe hit a two-run double and Carly Brewer capped the outburst with a two-run single.

Nyah Hulbert and Brewer both had two first-inning hits and combined to go 6-for-6 with a double. Hulbert scored three runs and Brewer finished with three RBI. Brewer also pitched all three innings for the win, working around five Indianola singles and one walk.

Indianola is now 11-14 overall and 7-7 in the Little Hawkeye. Dana Blake singled and drew a walk for the Indians and also made a sliding catch in center field. Ashley Schultz, Sam Gripp, Katie Fosenburg and Sully Downey added one hit each. Indianola’s next games are Saturday when they host Martensdale-St. Marys and Interstate 35.

Norwalk travels to Dallas Center-Grimes tonight for a doubleheader against the 4A sixth-ranked Mustangs at 5:30. The two teams are currently tied for first place in the Little Hawkeye standings. DC-G, which handed the Warriors their only conference loss on June 5, has won 14 consecutive games.

Brewer tells KNIA Sports that the Warriors are looking forward to the challenge against DC-G following a disappointing 6-3 outcome the first time around. “We’re definitely hungry,” she said. “The first game was a big setback for us and we want to get back at it.”

Game two of the doubleheader will be streamed live on kniakrls.com (KNIA3), starting at approximately 7:30.
