Pella Regional Health Center now offers Mako SmartRobotics, an advanced joint replacement surgery that helps surgeons create a personalized joint replacement surgical plan. CEO Bob Kroese says replacement for knees or hips is a treatment option designed to relieve pain caused by joint degeneration.
“We are proud to be the first hospital in southeast Iowa to offer this highly advanced SmartRobotics technology,” said Kroese “This addition to our orthopedic service line further demonstrates our commitment to provide the community with outstanding healthcare.”
First, the patient will have a Mako 3D CT scan so the surgeon can create a personalized plan based on each patient’s unique anatomy. Then, in the operating room, the surgeon validates the plan, makes any necessary adjustments, and uses the robotic arm to guide the joint replacement procedure and position the implant. By targeting only the damaged part of the joint, the surgeon helps protect the healthy bone and position the implant with greater accuracy compared to manual replacement procedures.
