The Class 3A #14 ranked Pella softball team wasted little time sweeping the season series against Pella Christian Monday night, needing just three innings to pick up a 13-0 Senior Night victory heard live on KNIAKRLS.com.

Playing in the nearly 100 degree temperatures, the Dutch bats were equally as hot in earning the run-rule win. In the bottom of the first inning, Pella sent 11 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on six hits, an error, a walk, and a sacrifice fly. The Dutch kept the pressure on in the second inning, scoring another five runs on five hits, a walk, and a ground out before ending the game in the third inning. Four Pella batters recorded multiple hits in the contest, led by Ava Curry’s 3-for-3 night at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. Pella senior Kiki Riggen said it’s been good to see the bats get going again after some recent struggles.

“We can always count on Ava to start it off, and as she said, through our lineup we just trust each other. We’ve been struggling to put the bat on the ball the second half of the season, but tonight we turned it around, and gained some confidence. And it’s just nice when you see your teammates do it and you know that you can do it too.”

Saige DeJong threw three innings of one-hit softball for the Dutch to record the win in the circle. Brynn Roozeboom had Pella Christian’s lone hit in the game, posting a double in the first inning. Pella improved to 17-10 overall and 10-7 in the Little Hawkeye Conference, while Pella Christian fell to 1-21 overall and 0-15 in the conference.

Both softball teams are back in action tonight, with Pella hosting Class 3A #1 North Polk at 7:15 pm and Pella Christian competing on the road at North Mahaska at 5:30 pm. Hear more about the win from Pella seniors Kiki Riggen and Ava Curry on Today’s Lely Radio Sports Page.
