A Des Moines man has been arrested for alleged felony theft, criminal mischief, and burglary of Knoxville High School.
According to court records, Knoxville officers were dispatched to Knoxville High School on June 3rd for a report of criminal mischief. Upon arrival, Knoxville Officers were informed that two suspects, later identified as 20-year-old August James Cawley and an unnamed juvenile, entered the building through the locked front doors on June 2nd just after 6:30 pm. Officers were informed that the doors were unlocked for a school related event. The two suspects did not attend the event and began vandalizing school property, and were also observed on camera walking into an office area.
After exiting the office area, one suspect was wearing a camera bag and the other had a gray sweatshirt, which neither individual entered the office or the building with. It was also confirmed with school staff that they were missing a Canon camera and a personal gray Nike sweatshirt. Video surveillance also captured the two riding floor cleaners and a personal electric wheelchair. The suspects took the personal electric wheelchair off of school property towards apartments across the street. Knoxville Officers later located the electric wheelchair at the Madison Heights apartments. School staff also informed Knoxville Officers that a staff member was in the school until approximately 8:15 pm. The suspects were last seen on video surveillance leaving the school at approximately 9:30 pm. The total value of the known stolen items was $4,470.
Cawley is charged with second degree theft and second degree criminal mischief, both Class D felonies, and second degree burglary, a Class C felony. Cawley is being held in the Marion County Jail.
