The Indianola softball team defeated Class 5A #4 Ankeny Centennial 8-6 and 5A #9 Des Moines Roosevelt 11-2 in five innings to go 2-0 at the Dallas Center-Grimes Invitational Friday, while the Indians baseball team wrapped up Little Hawkeye Conference play with a 7-0 victory at Newton.

The Indianola softball team kicked off Friday’s action by falling behind the ranked Jaguars 4-2 in the second inning, but responded with two runs in the third to tie the game at 4-4. A four-run fifth inning pushed the Indians in front 8-5 and they held on the rest of the way to pull out the upset win. In their second game of the tournament, Indianola took control early and cruised to the run-rule win. The Indians opened the game with five runs between the second and third innings, and after Roosevelt scored two runs in the fifth, answered with six runs in the bottom of the frame to end the game. Ashley Schultz had a strong showing on the day for Indianola, combining to go 3-for-6 on the day at the plate with a home run, and recording the win against Roosevelt with four innings of three hit softball. With their upset wins, the Indians softball team improved to 16-17 overall.

In Newton, the Indianola baseball team used a four-run second inning to jump in front of the Cardinals, then added single runs in the final three innings to improve to 23-10 overall and finish conference play with a 12-6 mark. George Blake turned in a well rounded performance in the victory, recording the win on the mound with three strikeouts in five innings pitched and going 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Luke Rockhold and Andrew DeWall combined to go 3-for-7 at the plate on the night with a double and two RBIs, while Dallas Harlan recorded his first career varsity hit and an RBI. 

The Indianola summer sports teams are back in action Monday, with the softball team traveling to Ottumwa and the baseball team hosting Des Moines Lincoln in a game that can be heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
