The Indianola City Council held a study session after their regular meeting Monday discussing the city social media policy for elected officials and city staff moving forward.

City Manager Ben Reeves tells KNIA News the city wants to find the balance of guidelines for respecting first amendment rights, but also be transparent on the authority of who is speaking and in what capacity.

“This is really a guideline and policy by which we act to make it really clear and simple to understand when we are speaking, to make sure the public knows if we are speaking on our own personal behalf or representing the city in this regard. How do we define that without curtailing peoples first amendment rights? It is a really fine balance of allowing people to speak but do so in a manner that is transparent to the public.”
