Sweet corn season is in full swing at Dan-D Farms south of Knoxville.
The sweet corn farm now has their product available at their stand in Knoxville. Getting the corn to the stand requires work of local high school students, who are in the fields early in the morning doing the picking. The face of the Dan-D Farms operation Dan Dennison says it’s important to him to only sell corn that has been picked that day. Dennison has now semi-retired from the industry, but his daughter Debra Kearney has taken over as owner of Dan-D farms and she says she is grateful for the hard working kids who come out and pick corn.
Dan-D’s corn did suffer some hail damage roughly two weeks ago and Kearney says she is appreciative of the customers being understanding. Kearney says despite some of the corn being unlikely to win a beauty contest, it still tastes as good as ever.
“If you want really beautiful corn, it does have spots, but if you’re in for the flavor, the corn is still delicious. We wouldn’t enter it in a beauty contest, but we would enter it in an eating contest. We hope people continue to be understanding about that, and that we can’t control the weather.”
You can purchase Dan-D sweet corn in the Knoxville Farm and Home parking lot for $7 a dozen. Hear from five of the Dan-D sweet corn pickers on today’s Let’s Talk Knoxville.
