The Dutch only had the benefit of one extra base hit but used baserunning and bunting to advance in the Class 3A Substate Baseball Playoffs, defeating Newton 3-1 Friday, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
No. 9 in Class 3A Pella fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first and stranded five base runners in the first three innings. The Dutch ended up with four hits in the 4th — only one of which even left the infield, and a critical multi-base error fielding a bunt by Cardinals Ace Pitcher Finn Martin that allowed two runs to score.
Teagan Hoekstra tossed seven efficient innings to earn the complete game win, while Landyn Bethards led the Dutch offense with a 2-for-3 performance with a double and stolen base.
