One person is dead and another was flown by helicopter to a Des Moines trauma center after a vehicle crashed into Accura Healthcare in Knoxville Monday afternoon.
According to a press release issued by the Knoxville Fire Department, fire crews arrived to find a minivan that had driven through the building into a resident’s room. The resident was pinned and required extraction. As a result of the incident, one person was pronounced dead at Knoxville Hospital and Clinics, and one was flown by helicopter to a trauma center in the Des Moines metro.
The building sustained significant damage requiring the evacuation of residents. Residents were transported to Knoxville Hospital and Clinics and the National Guard Armory in Knoxville while the building was secured, and temporary repairs could be completed.
The Knoxville Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Knoxville Police Department, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Accura staff, Knoxville Hospital, Knoxville Rural Fire Department, Indiana Township Fire Department, Pella EMS, Marion County Emergency Management Agency, Iowa State Patrol, and the Knoxville Community School District.
