Officials from Marion County met with representatives from S&S Quarries last week to address the sinkhole located south of Knoxville on 135th Place. During the meeting on Friday, experts hired by S&S Quarries presented findings attributing the sinkhole to limestone mining beneath the surface in the vicinity. The area near the sinkhole has been mined for limestone by S&S Quarries.
In a press release, Marion County Public Information Officer Emily Feagins wrote, “a comprehensive proposal outlining further investigation and potential remediation methods was submitted to Marion County officials, who are currently reviewing its details. Marion County remains optimistic that these efforts will yield a plan to resolve the sinkhole and ensure public safety in the affected area.
Marion County continues to caution people to stay away from this area, as it is extremely dangerous. The area has been fenced, barricaded, and signs have been posted to keep the public away from the area. Marion County reinforces prior statements that anyone who is not authorized to enter this area will be prosecuted for trespass.
Since April 2023, the affected road has been closed to ensure public safety. Marion County recognizes the inconvenience to residents and the economic impact of this closure. Officials are actively engaged in resolving the situation.”
