The City of Monroe is set to hold their annual Old Settlers celebration on Friday, August 2nd and Saturday, August 3rd.
The theme for this year’s annual event is Christmas in August and will include several returning favorites, including food stands, crafts, activities, and more taking place downtown. Kim Thomas with the Monroe Old Settlers Committee says that the celebration dates back to the 1890s.
“From what I’ve read, the organization was formed in 1897 and it consisted of four or five people that came together in our local park and just basically had a speech, played some music and everybody had a good time all around. The organization grew over the years, and now it’s become this annual event which has been around for over 100 years.”
