Counting down the top 10 moments of the 2023-24 school year for Simpson College with #1.
Simpson can claim a DIII National Title from this spring, after distance runner Spencer Moon wrapped up a historic career with a victory in the 10,000 Meter at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Moon bested the field in 30:41.91, securing the victory with a blistering final lap of 1:04.99. Moon said after the race it was surreal to realize that he had crossed the finish line first in his final collegiate competition.
“Once I passed the finish line, it was weird stopping in first because no one else had stopped yet. I’ve been to a lot of national meets and quite a few of them haven’t gone my way. So I know that I get done and I’m usually pretty disappointed after. So it was just kind of surreal to be done and realize that not only I had finally had my first outdoor All-American, but not only All-American I was a National Champion. It didn’t really set in for quite awhile.”
The Lake City, Iowa native became the fifth athlete in program history to win a national championship. He joins Kip Janvrin, Bret Hennessy, Danny Bauer and Kirk Pederson who combined for eight titles between 1981-88.
