Kyle Larson seems to know when the big sprint car events are. Saturday he claimed his third Knoxville Nationals win and the second straight year, leading all 50 laps as heard live on KNIA. While last year was a total domination, Larson did not establish a gap until late in the 50 lap race. Larson was pursued by a number of drivers. In the 1st half of the race, Carson Macedo got to within less than second just before the fuel stop on lap 25. However, Larson would put a few lapped cars between himself and Macedo. Gio Scelzi would also come close, actually drawing to within a couple of tenths on lap 35, but once again, Larson lengthened his lead and won by over three seconds. Larson said in victory lane the lapped cars running the low side was hard to pass.

Larson: “A tricky race, I know it doesn’t look like it. Those lappers were slowing me down and I wanted to get back to the low side so I think I strung together some good laps at the end.”

An emotional Gio Scelzi knew he had his chance to beat Larson, and just could not pull it off.

Scelzi: “Felt so good down there, and I didn’t want to go to the top, and I was better down low and when I got to Kyle I just couldn’t get to him. The race is 50 laps, not 30.”

Corey Day completed an all-California podium as he charged to 3rd from 11th to also earn hard charger. Day was pleased with 3rd.

Day: “Feel like we had a really good car there. I needed a caution on that last run. Really proud of my guys and hats off to Kyle and Gio, just have to give it up to them.”

Emerson Axsom earned Rookie of the Year and Brian Brown won Mr. Sprint Car. The Knoxville Raceway will fall silent until August 24th for Championship Night.
