Creating housing of all types has been a priority for Newton City Officials the past few years. Newton Mayor Evelyn George says the need for different types of housing was recognized about 10 years ago when the city had no new houses built in Newton. She notes a $30 million project underway now involves turning a former three-story Maytag building into Legacy Plaza Apartments.

“Legacy Plaza is the old Maytag Headquarters just off the downtown square. A portion of the historic buildings are being converted into loft type apartments that are available in Des Moines and urban areas. There will be about 80 apartments that are studio, 1 and 2 bedroom. They will be available at the end of September and into October.”

According to George, reservations representing interest in the apartments exceed the 80 units available.

“To me they really give a new option or choice to people looking for a more modern contemporary-type living.

Legacy Plaza Apartments will also feature a shared exercise area and community space. Hear more from Newton Mayor Evelyn George on today’s Let’s Talk Newton, or listen online at KNIA/KRLS.com under “Podcasts”, and subscribe through Apple, Google, or Spotify.
