Newton’s 2024-2025 Volleyball team scrimmaged in their home gym yesterday morning with Lynnville-Sully and Marshalltown. It was the first time this squad went against different players. Head Coach Heidi Woollums liked what she saw.

“I’m very very pleased with how they played today. When you go through your open gyms throughout the summer and you work on all these skills, to see them put it together all in a match this early in the season is fun to see.”

But Coach Woollums does have a priority for the team to work on.

“There were a few times in there I thought we panicked just a little bit. When things are not going our way we need to learn to calm down, relax and play through those situations because that’s the game of volleyball. That happens a lot in volleyball. People go on runs and the next second it’s your side that has the run.”

The Cardinals will have another scrimmage next week, traveling to Johnston High School for an exhibition that will include ten schools at 9 a.m. on Thursday, August 24th. Their first match on Tuesday, August 27th is at home against Saydel.
