The Indianola City Council passed the first reading of an ordinance allowing the ownership of chickens within city limits at their meeting Monday in a 4-2 vote. Speakers at the public hearing against the ordinance brought up issues including long term impacts, public health, noise, smell, and storage of waste, while many in favor cited the benefits of self sustaining, pest control, and possible educational avenues. Councilmembers Ron Dalby and Steve Richardson voted against the ordinance, citing possible impact on neighbors and more clear regulations and fees among others. A second reading of the ordinance will go before council on September 3rd.

The council also approved the first reading for a rezoning request for Twin Creeks, an ordinance for Building Design Standards Alternatives, and a plat of survey request. The council also approved an additional $15k from the hotel/motel tax that will go towards the Des Moines Metro Opera for venue improvements.
