When the apron at Newton Municipal airport is expanded in Fiscal Year 2026, most of the money to pay for it will come from the state. At a meeting last week, the Iowa Transportation Commission awarded the project a $340,000 Airport Improvement Grant. The city will cover the rest of the cost, which is expected to be about $60,000. The Iowa Transportation Commission awarded a total of $6,300,000 in Airport Improvement grants last week. The funding will assist 23 airports across Iowa with a variety of aviation safety initiatives, air service development activities, and system planning. The money for the grant program comes from state revenue generated from aviation fuel taxes and aircraft registration fees.
